Hello Beautiful Yogis!
Warm summery greetings to you all. How are you all as we move towards the end of the summer holidays? How has your summer unfolded? I hope that wherever you are in the great cycle and flow of things that you have time for reflection, time to take stock and time to breathe.
Welcome to our August newsletter, brimming with seasonal living tips and a sprinkling of ancient yogic wisdom to help keep you in balance during this transitional season. Welcome to our new subscribers too- it’s great to have you here in our Wild Tide Community and I hope I get to meet some of you this month as we move into our next term of exciting events.
We are soon approaching the season of Late Summer which is such a special season. Before studying seasonal yoga I used to find the end of summer such a difficult transition and would find myself mourning the end of the holidays and the gradual shortening of the days. Now however I’ve come to appreciate the beauty and gorgeousness of this important transitional season, and we’re going to look into some ways we can learn to love this time of year!
Seasonal Yoga Lifestyle Tips
Embrace the Earth Element
Late Summer is a transitional time of year, where we move from the high energy of Summer to the slow decline of Autumn. It can be challenging for many people, that feeling of ‘leaving the party’ of summer and thinking ahead to the colder darker months and its common to experience feelings of lower mood and energy at this time of year. However, before we get too down in the mouth I’d like to share why I’ve grown to love this season and hopefully share some tips that will help you embrace the change. Late Summer is a season to take stock, to nourish our bodies and minds, to root and to ground. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is the season of the Earth Element which is all about nurturing, stability, and inner strength. Let’s dive into some practical ways we can embrace this season:
Make time for yourself: It’s so easy to bustle through our days focusing on accomplishing our to do lists and meeting the needs of others around us, but when was the last time you focused on you? Reflecting on the questions ‘What do I need?’ or ‘How do I nourish myself'?’ can help you to bring more balance into your daily life. Perhaps that’s something as simple as taking a bath, or an evening walk by yourself - or committing to a 5 minute meditation practice before brekkie.
Connect to the Earth: The Earth element of Late Summer is all about grounding, building strength and stability and nourishing our bodies and minds. It’s a lovely time of year to start fostering a connection with Mother Earth - walking barefoot on a beach or forest, practicing yoga outdoors, foraging for berries or herbs, taking a wild swim or even a wild paddle to connect in with the elements. We’ll be ticking off a lot of these boxes at some of our upcoming outdoor yoga events as well as at our Seasonal Yoga Retreat - see booking page for details.
Yoga Yoga Yoga!: Okay, I might be slightly biased, but did you know that practicing a few simple yoga postures daily, you can help decrease feelings of worry and anxiety, improve sleep and even foster increased self-worth? Here are a few very easy poses you can try at home.
1) Wide Leg Child’s Pose with Hands in Prayer
Have your big toes touching, knees apart and sink your hips towards your heels. Extend the arms out in front, bend the elbows and bring palms to a prayer position.
2) Malasana
Standing with the feet hip-width apart, turn the toes out slightly. Squat down and bring your arms in front of you, hands in prayer and elbows pushing lightly against the legs. To come out, sit on the mat and straighten the legs.
3) Sphinx
Lie on your front, placing elbows slightly forward from the shoulders, palms facing down. Relax your legs and buttocks. Check what feels most comfortable for the neck - head upright, head dropping down or a block as a support under forehead.
Meridians and Organs of the Season
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Late Summer is associated with the stomach and the spleen meridians. Both of these organs are connected with digestion both on a physical level in how we digest our food, but also how we emotionally digest what’s going on in our lives. We can often find ourselves struggling with fatigue, triggered by over-exertion or emotional stress. Prioritising rest, yoga and eating nourishing earthy foods can all help to boost your energy and digestion at this time of year.
Nutrition Tips for Staying Healthy and Centred
Late Summer is the time to look after your stomach and spleen and begin to boost your immune system in preparation for Autumn. Soups, stews and roasted veggies are the way forwards as we start to phase out the raw foods of summer and maintain heat in the body to prepare for Winter.
Nourish your Stomach: Yellow, golden and round foods all help to nourish the stomach - think butternut squash, peaches, apricots.
Breakfast like a King: The time of day associated with the Earth Element is 7am - 11am and so eating a nourishing, warming breakfast is so important at this time of year. Some ideas could include a bowl of your favourite grain porridge (oats, corn, rice, quinoa..) with stewed apples, cinnamon and some dried fruit and nuts. Or smashed avocado on wholegrain toast with a poached egg and a dash of sweet date syrup for the sweet toothed.
Minimize Dampness: Late Summer is a damp time of year so take care to avoid processed foods, eating late at night and cut down on wheat and sugar to minimize dampness in the body. Adding a squeeze of lemon or a dash of parsley to dishes can also help alleviate dampness.

Training
I’m now coming to the last few modules of my Advanced Yin training and am loving the depth and insight this is giving me into working with the deeper tissues in the body. Next month will see me start the next phase of my 500 hour training with the course ‘Alignment, Adjustment and Inclusion’ which I’m super excited about. I also took an online course in working with ‘Yoga for Anxiety’ which I’m really looking forward to weaving into my regular weekly classes.
