Hello Beautiful Yogis!
How are you all as we arrive into full Summer? I hope for those of you in Scotland that the sun makes an appearance soon and that some warmth and heat begin to find you.
Welcome to our July newsletter, brimming with seasonal living tips and a sprinkling of ancient yogic wisdom to help keep you in balance during this beautiful season. Welcome to our new subscribers - it’s great to have you here in our Wild Tide Community and I hope I get to meet some of you in August as we move into our next term of events.
I’m cherishing this time in Budapest, surrounded by family and the serene beauty of nature. The garden here is a testament to the abundance of summer – fruit trees are beginning to bear their bounty, and grapevines are lush with promise. It's a reminder of the cycles of growth and the importance of nurturing ourselves as we would a garden.
Seasonal Yoga Lifestyle Tips
Embrace the Fire Element
Summer is the season of fire, a time for expansion, growth, and light. It’s a period where the energy around us is at its peak, encouraging us to embrace warmth and vitality. Here are some tips for your yoga practice in summer:
Early Morning Practice: Beat the heat (heat?? did someone say heat? it’s Scotland!!) by practicing yoga in the early mornings. This not only helps you avoid the scorching midday sun but also aligns your body’s rhythms with the natural flow of the day. (if you’re an early riser why not join us for our Sunrise Yoga event - read on for more details!)
Sun Salutations: Incorporate Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) into your routine to honor the sun and invigorate your body. These sequences can help you harness the powerful energy of the sun and channel it within.
Cooling Poses: Balance the fire element with cooling poses such as Forward Folds, Child’s Pose, and Reclining Bound Angle Pose. These asanas help to calm the body and mind.
Meridians and Organs of the Season
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the heart and small intestine meridians. This is the time to nurture our heart energy and support our digestive system.
Heart Meridian: Focus on heart-opening poses like Camel Pose, Bridge Pose, and Cobra Pose. These postures help to release tension and cultivate a sense of joy and love.
Small Intestine Meridian: Twists such as Seated Spinal Twist and Revolved Triangle Pose can stimulate the small intestine, aiding in digestion and the assimilation of nutrients.
Nutrition Tips for Staying Healthy and Hydrated
Staying nourished and hydrated is key during the summer months. Here are some tips to keep you cool and thriving:
Hydrate with Purpose: Drink plenty of water and infuse it with slices of cucumber, mint, or citrus fruits for an extra refreshing boost. Teas like nettle and peppermint are also super refreshing and funnily enough quite cooling. And you can’t beat a cool glass of coconut water with some lemon wedges and a few fresh mint leaves thrown in!
Seasonal Fruits and Veggies: Embrace the bounty of summer with water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, berries, and leafy greens. These not only hydrate but also provide essential vitamins and minerals.
Light and Fresh Meals: Opt for lighter meals that are easy to digest. Think vibrant salads, smoothies, and grilled veggies. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can weigh you down.
Other News and Events
Training
My training continues over these next few months with the 2 year journey towards becoming a 500 hour teacher! My next course ‘Alignment, Adjustment, Inclusion’ will see us explore more deeply the anatomy and alignment of yoga with a focus on creating safe, welcoming spaces for all bodies. I’m also coming towards the second half of my year of Advanced yin training which has been an amazing deep dive into the muscles and all things Yin!
International Day of Yoga
I was delighted to be invited by the Scottish Hindu Foundation to teach at their incredible event ‘International Day of Yoga’ which took place at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. This was hands down the largest yoga class I’ve ever taught to date, with an entire sports hall full of lovely yogis (not to mention a hands free microphone and a small stage!) It was wonderful to witness the incredible organisation and drive behind this amazing organisation and to meet all the other inspirational teachers, volunteers and yogis who made this day so special.
