Wild Tide Yoga - September Newsletter

Dear Wild Tide Yogis,

I hope you are all finding time to embrace some of the final stages of Late Summer - perhaps noticing the abundance of berries on the hedges.  Let’s be honest, Scotland didn’t really ‘do’ summer this year so it’s tricky to romanticise this season of Late Summer when at this moment all we see is fog and mist (for those of us lucky enough to sea blue sky today I hope you embrace it and enjoy the sun’s rays!) As the leaves begin to turn and the air becomes crisper in the mornings, we find ourselves entering Autumn, a season of letting go of what no longer serves us, a time for turning our attention inwards and grounding. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Autumn is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians, which govern the breath, grief, and the ability to release what no longer serves our highest good—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Our seasonal yoga this month will focus on nourishing these areas, promoting clarity, and embracing change with grace.

Seasonal Living Tips for Autumn

Autumn is all about preparation and conservation. As the energy of summer fades, we naturally start to slow down and turn inward.  We are preparing the body for the cooler months ahead - boosting our immune system and beginning to conserve that precious energy. Here are some seasonal living tips to help you align with the rhythms of the season:

- Nutrition: Focus on warming, nourishing foods like soups, stews, and root vegetables. Spices like ginger and cinnamon can help keep your internal fire burning as temperatures drop.

- Movement: Autumn is a wonderful time to incorporate slower, more introspective practices. Think Yin Yoga (hey did you know we have a Cosy Yin Retreat lined up for December?!) , long walks in nature, and breathwork sessions.

- Self-Care: Ensure you are wrapped up warm, a great excuse to dig out those winter coats, cosy jumpers and fluffy socks - and maybe even an opportunity for a wardrobe clear out.  Clear out any clutter in your home and work space, asking yourself if these items still serve you and have a place in your life.  Get your finances in order and clear your ‘to do’ list so you can approach Winter with a sense of clear headedness.

Meridian Focus: Lung & Large Intestine

In Autumn we will focus on movements and postures that stimulate the Lung and Large Intestine meridians. Both meridians run through the arms so we use lots of opening and closing postures to stimulate and increase lung ventilation. These channels support us in processing grief and letting go—whether that’s on a physical, emotional, or mental level. The lungs work with the colon as a team - lungs taking in the pure and the colon eliminating the waste. Expect expansive heart-openers, gentle twists, and breathwork designed to release stagnant energy and invite fresh prana.

Training News

I’m really enjoying deepening my knowledge with two fantastic courses this Autumn. I’m continuing my training in Advanced Yin Yoga and also embarking on a new course, Alignment, Adjustment, Inclusion, which not only dives deeper into correct alignment and anatomy but also focuses on creating safe and inclusive spaces for all students. Both courses are key components of my journey toward my 500-hour certification, which I’ll be working on over the next two years. I can’t wait to bring this enhanced understanding into our classes and retreats.

August Highlights

Wow—August was such a whirlwind of fun! Celebrating *Wild Tide Yoga's First Birthday* was an absolute dream, and I was so touched by all the lovely souls who joined us for our special Beach Yoga event at Longniddry Beach. It was a fresh and breezy evening, but our fiery summer yoga flow kept us warm and we enjoyed a guided yoga nidra to the sound of the waves.  Loved gathering round the firepit  toasting marshmallows and eating birthday cake afterwards with our amazing community.  Some of you even braved an evening swim—what a magical night!

We also had an amazing time at *Ladies Night at Foxlake*, where I had the pleasure of guiding two yoga sessions amidst a backdrop of thrilling water sports and wellness activities. What a night!

Our *Late Summer Mini Retreat* was another highlight—a calming evening where we shared a lovely yoga flow focused on balancing the Stomach and Spleen meridians and strengthening our core., as well as looking at ways we can boost our self esteem and confidence. The post-yoga chats over herbal teas and healthy treats are always a special way to connect with each other, and I’m already looking forward to more evenings like this!
